This past Friday i went to the Issue Project Room for director Suzanne Fiol's 21st birthday. lots of roasted chickens, hummus and whiskey were had by all. But the highlight of the evening had to be when I ran into long time friend and sometimes collaborator Stephan Moore. Stephan is an amazing sound artist that created the Hemispherical speakers for Issue Project Room and the main sound engineer for the Merce Cunningham Dance Company. He is also the guy that invited me to be a part of what i consider the most important artist residency of my career to date. It's a coveted spot as a sound artist in residence for the DIA:BEACON, Bard College and the Merce Cunningham Dance Co.
Having been a long time lover of the DIA:BEACON museum since it's opening (I first traveled there when I was on my solo "Those Eyes of Hers" East Coast tour in 2004) the gallery space within the DIA:BEACON that I remember most is the "Torqued Ellipses" pieces by Richard Serra. When i first walked into one of the pieces, I remembered thinking to myself," I am going to perform in this piece.....I don't know how, and i don't know when, but this is where my work belongs."
4 Years later at a birthday party Stephan the magnificent asked me the question that any sound artist would LOVE to hear:
"Which Serra do you want to play in?"
"Excuse me?" I asked...
"I scheduled us in Richard Serra portion of the residency. There's 4 sound artists, and 4 Richard Serra pieces, which one do you want?"
This is the part where i jump up and down with pure joy and amazement at how the universe works.
Then I started to cry. And I can't stop crying.
It's a real dream come true. To perform WITH Merce, WITHIN a Richard Serra, AT the DIA:BEACON.
Tickets go on sale May 30th and tend to sell out quickly. I would love to see you there. Please bring some tissues, because I will probably be crying the whole time.
